Greetings Erin!
The best response I've ever heard to the salary expectation question
was:
"I expect the salary you will offer your best candidate."
Obviously, you must have something in mind, to judge if they offer
something close to that dollar signs dancing in your head. Then, the
negotiations begin. Maybe a higher salary? Maybe a lower salary but
better benefits? Maybe a hiring bonus? Maybe more paid vacation?
Maybe guarantee of administrative leave for professional development?
Etc., etc., etc.
As Deb points on, it is a 'pissing contest'. While one candidate will
view $xx,xxx as a fair salary, another will view $yy,yyy (higher or
lower) as a fair salary.
Best wishes, Erin.
Sincerely,
Jay Heuman
