Good Morning Sarah,
At the museum system where I work (and in other large museum systems or museums where I have worked in the past), Full-Time/Permanent positions are formally announced in professional channels either via the internet or in-print publications.
On the other hand.....Full-Time/Temporary and Part-Time/Temporary (note the keyword Temporary) are NOT formally announced via those methods........rather these " Temporary"positions are announced word-of-mouth, through job announcements in local newspapers,......and sometimes by keeping a stack of unsolicited resumes in a file cabinet of the supervisor or manager doing the hiring....and that person taking the time to contact a possible/potential applicant. I will admit that the unsolicited resume (and then relying on the hiring staff person to contact you) is the least efficient and effective of the three temporary position announcement methods just listed. Please note, that resumes sent to human resources will probably not (90% of the time) make their way to the right hiring person, so the trick is to introduce yourself to the manager or supervisor in the appropriate department that may have a temporary position open for which you would like to be considered (i.e. contact the Exhibit Manager if you want to work in the Exhibits Department). This is best done in person.
As a wise person once said, ...... "It is not important who you know....what is important is who knows you!"
Best Wishes for Success,
Wesley

One question I have, is there any benefit/harm in submitting a resume to a
museum when they are not they are looking to hire someone at that time?
I've been out of school for a few months now, and at this point I am
looking to find a job to pay the bills while I look for something in the
field.
Would it be beneficial to send out resumes this way? Or would it be better
to only send them when a job is announced?
Thanks
Sarah
