COLLECTIONS INTERNSHIP



The Collections Intern will gain practical, professional experience in the area of collections management at a museum accredited by the American Association of Museums (AAM). 



The intern will work with the Registrar/Collections Manager to catalog and register artifacts, update collections records, and help with the implementation of the museum’s new collections management software system. Work will include data entry, cataloging, inventory work, and checking the new database for accuracy. In addition, the intern may complete a digitization project that will help the museum allow for increased public access to its historical collections. 



Qualifications: Candidates must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, able to work independently, and have strong computer skills. Preference will be given to candidates who express a desire to pursue a career in museums or a closely related field, and who are enrolled in a related academic program. Some previous experience in museums or a related field is desired.



Compensation for the internship will be $1,500 for 230 hours of work experience, and the hours may be arranged to fit the intern’s schedule, so that s/he has discretion concerning the timeframe and weekly schedule for the internship experience.

CURATORIAL INTERNSHIP



The Wisconsin Maritime Museum Curatorial Intern will work directly with the Curator on an exhibits-related project. She or he will be responsible for a variety of activities, including research and exhibits production and conservation and registration of collections. 



The intern will also gain practical experience in research and writing for publication by providing a feature article for the Museum’s quarterly publication ANCHOR NEWS. Research projects may involve various Museum resources such as ship's plans, archival materials, three-dimensional artifacts, or photographic and art collections. Remuneration for the internship will be $1,500 for 230 hours of work experience, and the hours may be arranged to fit the intern’s schedule, so that s/he has discretion concerning the timeframe and weekly schedule for the internship experience.



Qualifications: Undergraduate or graduate students are encouraged to apply; however, the candidate must have an academic background in history or museum studies and be familiar with museum exhibits and collections practices.

Wisconsin Maritime Museum

EDUCATION INTERNSHIP



The Wisconsin Maritime Museum is offering an education internship for the summer of 2004.  This internship will pay $1,500 for 230 hours of work experience and can begin June 1st.

 

The education intern will work with the Museum Educator and will also interact with other Museum staff.  The following duties will be included in your internship:

	Assist the Museum Educator with planning and implementing three weeks of summer school programs.

	Teach educational programs and give museum tours to visiting groups of children.

	Coordinate a daily art activity for visiting children and families.

	Assist visitors in the Children’s Waterways Room.



The intern should have the following qualifications:

	Be in your junior or senior year of college as an education major or studying in the area of museum education in the fall of 2004.

	Have previous experience with children in structured and non-structured settings.

	Be familiar with children’s diverse learning styles and behaviors.

	Have excellent communication skills along with the desire to experience teaching and learning in a non-traditional setting.
