Job Description
Collections Management Intern to assist with collections. Typical tasks
will include, but not be limited to: cataloging, numbering, conducting
provenance research and tracking objects, and packing/rehousing objects as
needed. Data will be entered into PastPerfest , our new collections
database system. Work will be performed in our new on-site collections
storage building, and in our off-site storage buildings and in our historic
buildings.

The stipend for this internship is $2,500-$2,700 depending upon length of
internship and includes housing (and utilities including basic cable TV) in
an on-site furnished 3-bedroom/one bath house that will probably be shared
with another intern.
Intern will work with a wide variety of objects, helping curatorial staff to
relocate collections into a new on-site collections storage facility,
re-interpreting and refurnishing several historic houses, planning and
installing at least one new exhibit.
The Intern will experience working with diverse collections, including a
large textile collection, and gain knowledge associated with cataloging
objects from the mid-19th century to the present. The Intern will become
well-versed in proper cleaning, cataloging, marking procedures, and research
methods for establishing provenance and/or object history, and preparing
condition reports. Specific collections identified for the Summer 2004
project are our tools and household objects, and portions of our extensive
wedding gown collection.

During the summer, the Intern will have an opportunity to visit several
history museums throughout Western New York, accompanying Amherst Museum
curatorial staff as they visit collections storage facilities and exhibits.
Opportunities may also be available to work with the Museum's Education
Curator during programs for school-age children and to participate in
several of our special events.

The qualifications for this internship are: 1) Enrollment in or recent
graduate of a graduate program in Museum Studies, or closely related field;
2) A basic knowledge of and some experience with artifact handling
techniques, general museum collection management practices; 3) Experience
with -- or willingness to learn-- PastPerfect.
Amherst Museum, located mid-way between Buffalo and Niagara Falls, is on
35-acres in a semi-rural area adjacent to the historic Erie Barge Canal. The
Museum's facilities include a 22,650 sq. ft. administration and exhibit
building, the new 6,500 sq. ft. collections storage building, and 12
historic 19th century buildings (one of which are still being restored).
The WNY area features a wide variety of noted cultural institutions that
are within 20 minutes of the Museum; Toronto and Rochester are less than 2
hours away. WNY is also noted for its wonderful summer weather,
recreational opportunities, and very reasonable cost-of-living. For
information on Amherst Museum, see our website: www.amherstmuseum.org. For
further information or to apply for the position, contact Jessica Norton,
Curator or Lynn Beman, Director. Applications must be received by May 7,
2004.
