Your artist is either incredibly naiive and insensitive OR (more likely, in
my opinion) he is trying to make a statement, knowing full well that he will
awaken some very hard feelings.
While your museum is not run by the denomination, it DOES interpret that
denomination and I think you owe the denomination the courtesy of not
publically rubbing its nose in the dirt.
I would insist on the artist removing the commitment AND marriage
certificates.
Neither you nor I are gay-bashers; just professionals displaying a modicum
of sensitivity and, indeed, common sense. If somebody wants to go to the
wall on this one, let it be the artist, regardless of the quality of his
work.
