Using a preliminary search on A9.com (Amazon's search
page), I found two opposing pages having to do with
closet taxes. One said the story about closet taxes
was not true. The National Park Service, however,
says they were, though taxed by the British Crown when
the US was occupied.
AGAINST TAX
Beth had heard an outside tour guide saying Ashton
Villa didn’t have closets because property taxes used
to be based on the number of rooms in a house and
closets counted as rooms .Beth hates the closet tax
story for two reasons: because it is not true and
because she is a curator.

FOR TAX
Considered rooms and taxed as such by the British
crown, closets were not often built during the
colonial era. After the American Revolution, the
"closet tax" was abolished, allowing homeowners to
construct closets without additional taxation.
