Project Fellows
The HistoryMakers National African American Video Oral History Archive
Chicago, IL.
The HistoryMakers seeks applications for a ten-month fellowship program
commencing Summer 2004 and ending in April of 2005 for two Project Fellows.
Each Project Fellow would be responsible for watching the videotaped
testimonies of 100 HistoryMaker oral history interviews and working to encode,
proofread, correct, catalogue and index each assigned interview. Since the
project involves developing a consistent indexing scheme allowing for easy
accessibility of The HistoryMakers digital archives, each Project fellow must
be detailed-oriented, proficient with personal computers and Microsoft
programs, an adept researcher and proofreader and capable of working as part of
a team as well as alone. Each fellow must be able to quickly learn how to use a
state of the art video indexing system developed by Carnegie Mellon University.
Each HistoryMaker interview is approximately three to five hours in length.
The HistoryMakers is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation dedicated to the
creation of a national video archive of first person narratives of African
American history makers, both well known and unsung. While the initial goal is
to create an archive of 5,000 interviews, the archives' holdings consist of 800
interviews of African Americans across a variety of disciplines. For more

The Project Fellow will:
· Be responsible for proofreading, fact-checking, and indexing ten
HistoryMaker interviews per month
· Index each assigned interview and assigning subject headings to each
thematic part of the interview
· Implement a cataloging system for the collection
· Write brief summaries of each assigned interview
· Proofread the work of another fellow for project consistency
· Do other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree in American history,
anthropology, or a humanities related field. Graduate students in history,
ethnography, library science with a concentration in archival management, or
other related field are also encouraged to apply. The candidate must be an
adept proofreader and prior experience with indexing oral history interviews a
plus. Minority candidates meeting these qualifications are strongly encouraged
to apply.
Essentials:
The candidate will have:
· Comprehensive knowledge of American History
· Strong project planning and time management skills
· Familiarity with computer databases, data entry, and basic office
software
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Project Fellows Stipend
$150 per completed interview.
