Museums located in inner cities (like Baltimore) can quickly overcome the
challenge to engage more "diverse" participants in their summer programs if
  (1) they are open to really tackling what the real obstacles are   (2)
forming new partnerships with others who would love to help them achieve
their diversity goals.

In my opinion, YOUR MUSEUM IS TERRIFIC and you will be able to draw as many
bright, enthusiastics students as you want however, you need to start small,
keep program cost low, and put some of your financial resources into
transportation.  Try to approach this challenge in a non-traditional way
(for museums) and not get caught up in asking the same potential donors for
money that everyone else is asking.

My marketing motto is GEOGRAPHY MATTERS.
Your museum is located in a city with close to 60% African-American
population with a 70% High School drop out rate among African-Americans.

Your location in Mt.Vernon is excellent.  The Walters is accessible by bus
and Light rail.  Start with programs like Bridges (St. Paul's School summer
preparatory program that works with inner city youth has a strong art
component) and B.E.S.T. Baltimore Education Scholarship Trust is two blocks
from your museum.   Both organizations are overwhelmed with applications
from bright inner city kids who have good academic records and supportive
families.

In terms of education, the situation in Baltimore is very bleek and my hope
is that the museums, colleges, and private schools will all commit some of
their resources to making things better for city kids who truly deserve
better.  I grew up in Baltimore city public schools and received a decent
education.  My feeling is that today that's a pretty rare.
