Hello--
Old National Georgraphic Magazines were profusely illustrated with
drawings pre-WWI and are useful for documentation of contemporary fashion,
although they might not show close-ups of socks.
For early socks/stockings, I have references to one Costanza
Rangone Fregoso, wife of the celebrated condottiere and spy, Cesare
Fregoso. They lived in Verona and at Garda on the lake in the sixteenth
century. One of her special talents was knitting white silk stockings
decorated with gold embroidery. She made several pairs with gold fleur-de-lys
for the visiting King of France in the late 1530s.
