We operate out of an old depot and also experience this white
crumbly "effervescent" material on our brick walls. Though it may be
removed for cosmetic value I am fairly certain it is not cause for concern
with your artifacts unless they came into direct contact with it. I do
recommend that if you are planning on removing it that you at least cover
artifacts in some way and be sure to vacuum well after the job is done.
