An excellent resource is "Christmas Through the Decades" by Robert
Brenner, Schiffer Publishing 1993.  It outlines the prevailing decorating
trends for each decade from the end of the 19th century through the later
years of the 20th century.  Although primarily a collector's resource,
Brenner's book does a fine job of discussing the social factors underlying
each decade's preferred decoration.  Hope this helps.
