A dear friend of mine was the art director of a large New York City ad
agency. He tells the story of a young man coming in for an interview and
while showing off "his" portfolio, took credit for a campaign that my
friend had done several years before at another agency - while the young
man was still in high school. Seeing that my friend was quite upset, the
kid said that he had admired it and that is why he wanted to go into
advertising!! He didn't get the job so he is still out there somewhere.
I imagine that is why we should really check references when we hire.
Recently a friend of mine was asked for his graduate school and museum
studies credentials and transcripts and he had the schools submit them to
the search committee.
Better safe than sorry.
