We are a small museum in a small town- staff 3.5, town of 15,000 county of
25,000- with a nominal marketing budget- we are very fortunate to have a
name draw- Big Band leader Glenn Miller graduated high school here- we are
fanatic about keeping our information in the various travel guides (AAA,
Mobil, Fodor's) up to date and accurate- even with extended hours,
marketing, free admission, big events (Glenn Miller Swingfest) montlhly
programs, having every kindergartner in the school district come through,
and sitting just off the interstate we average 10,000 a year visitation- and
it has taken us almost 30 years to get to that number!!! We are doing more
marketing targeted to the day traveler in the Denver Metro area (80 miles
away) and trying to come up with other places to hit up folks, but...
As to having 8500 in year one- I don't think that's reasonable, after all
you're new- have the powers that be even given you the money to do the
marketing to let people know you exist?!?
And to the question of board expectations- we're fortunate in that as long
as we're trying to come up with new ways to get the word out , even if they
don't work, the board is fairly content.
