I've taken an online course (part of an MA program in Buddhist studies at
University of Sunderland, UK) and can tell you that based on that course,
that online course work is more challenging and invigorating than any course
I have taken in "live" graduate school. Everyone is involved in discussions;
there is no way to avoid a personality that may grate (so compromises and
accommodations need to be found); there is no way to duck an assignment; and
there is a definite trill in working with folks from around the globe. I was
averaging 30-40 e-mails, three and four days of the week, related to the
course. Very intensive, very rewarding, much depends on the instructor.
There is no place to hide in a well constructed online course. You also have
to be very well organized to do well. I would definitely recommend online
coursework and see no negatives to it except that you really don't get to
meet your counterparts in person, but in some ways you get to know them even
better and more deeply than if you spent time with them in class.

Hi All,

I've been watching the discussion of the U.Ok. Program and saw the
mention that it's 100% online. That's very tempting.

I'd love to know your opinion of the value of an online degree. My
schooling was all done when online classes were stuff of the far
future. Does it carry the weight an in-class degree does? For those
of you who have taken on-line classes, do you feel you got what was
necessary from the class? I find I benefit a great deal from being in
a classic classroom setting.
