A simple way to demonstrate ground water can be made using colored sands of
different grain sizes as the "soils" mixed with a layer of different-sized
marbles for the boulders, rocks, and pebbles. If you were to contain this in
a well-drained "ant farm" sort of case that is WATERPROOFED (we don't want
any floor spills, do we?), you could have your guests try it out once every
1/2 hour or hour depending on how well the "soils" dried out between demos.
I would suggest an eyedropper for rainfall, and a measured test tube or
small beaker for the demonstration of streams.  Automate using a small water
pump if the exhibit is "hands off."
