Don't forget to throw a few books under that virtual Christmas tree, not
just toys, games and clothes. There were some instant classics that came
out in the 50's or were widely read/gifted then. Off the top of my head:
Charlotte's Web, Harold and the Purple Crayon, the Eloise books, some of the
Dr. Seuss books, The Catcher in the Rye, The Diary of Ann Frank ...
Under the Gifts for Dad category, iconic 50's gifts are harder to find. A
lot of the classic gifts of ties, handkerchiefs, cuff links, tie tacks,
pens, Scotch, golf clubs, bowling balls, etc. are still being given 50+
years later. However, there was also lots of smoking related paraphernalia
like fancy lighters, ashtrays etc. etc.. The popularity of these was not
confined to the 50's, of course, but you would not see nearly so much of
this kind of thing today, especially not being given as a Christmas gift,
which is another example of the changed views towards smoking today.

Hi all,
I am planning a 1950s exhibition for Christmastime
this year (called "Jingle Bell Rock: a 1950s
Holiday"), and our theme is going to be things that
would have been given or recieved as Christmas gifts.
I am grouping them into categories by family member,
like "Gifts for Dad," "Gifts for Teens," etc.
So I want to pick your brains about CLASSIC 1950s
objects that we absolutely MUST include.
We will be soliciting museum members, the community,
and other local museums for loan items to augment our
collection. I would like to provide a "wish list" of
what we're looking for.
Thank you!
Kim Kenney
