Good evening, colleagues - I have had very good luck using the
MicroChamber/Silversafe papers available from Conservation Resources
International (www.conservationresources.com) as interleaving and wrapping
of textile items with odor problems (i.e. smoke from a fire; mould/mildew
from improper storage; mothball overkill) before I then bag them up (in
polyethlene sheeting and/or bags) for further treatment. The
MicroChamber/Silversafe absorbs odors very well and is affordable enough to
be disposable once treatment is begun. And, as already has been mentioned,
you must be very careful and take all of the precautions to protect the
workers' health and well being while handling the textiles and hats.
It is possible that the inner works of the hats (such as heavily
sized/starched buckram) are the feeding/breeding ground for the mould/mildew
colonies.

Subject: suggestions for hats with a bad smell...
Hello List,
We recently acquired a collection of textiles and hats
that had been stored in someone's basement. The hats
were stored in a round plastic hat box that was
growing mold on the bottom of the outside. There is
mold inside the box. There is no evidence of mold on
the hats -- they are colored so that mold would be
easily visible. But there is a horrible smell
attached to the hats that seems to have no cause on
the hats themselves.
I was wondering what might be causing the smell, if it
will be harmful to other artifacts, and what to do to
remedy the situation.
We are talking about four hats from the 1950s/60s,
none of which appear to have any water damage at all.
In fact, all four are in excellent condition.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
