TITLE: Gallery Technician, Part-Time
LINE OF AUTHORITY: Reports to Director of Exhibitions and Artist Services
AREAS OF WORK:
General Description: Assists the Director of Exhibitions and Artist
Services and the Exhibitions Associate in designing, installing and
maintaining exhibitions and gallery areas to appropriate professional
standards
Specific Duties:
* Clean, patch and paint walls, pedestals, and
auxiliary exhibition elements as directed
* Assist in, or perform under minimal supervision, the
installation of exhibitions according to own design or design by the artist
or exhibitions department staff, including adjusting lighting as necessary
* Routine maintenance and monitoring of condition of
artworks received, in storage and on exhibition, both indoor and outdoor;
notify staff of repair or adjustment needs; perform cleaning and adjustment
as required or directed
* Maintain lighting of exhibition spaces in good
working order; change light bulbs as needed
* Perform alone under minimal supervision, the
crating/uncrating or wrapping/unwrapping of works of art and organizational
tasks related to their receipt/shipment as required or directed
* Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the
exhibition preparation and storage areas, including a complete paint,
material, tool, bulb and equipment inventory; replenish supplies as
necessary
* Supervision of volunteers or interns as appropriate
* Perform other exhibition-related duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Required:
* Sensitivity to needs of contemporary art and artists
* Prior experience as a registrar and/or gallery technician in a
museum, gallery or other exhibition facility
* Basic carpentry and fix-it skills; prior experience with hand power
tools
* Excellent hand-eye coordination
* Ability to do moderate lifting (up to 50 lbs. per load with
appropriate mechanical assistance)
* Ability to climb ladders up to 12 feet high; ability to utilize
auxiliary height devices above 12 ft. high
Preferred:
* B.A., B.F.A. or M.F.A. in a visual art discipline
* Intermediate to advanced carpentry skills
* Ability to do heavy lifting (50-100 lbs. per load with appropriate
mechanical assistance)
* Valid driver's license
* Flexibility to travel out of town (no overnights)
HOURS: 20-40 hours per week, to be determined based on the installation
needs of each exhibition, usually between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. with occasional
evening or weekend hours according to the needs of the project. Optimal
scheduling will be three to four part-days per week at regular intervals.
RATE OF PAY: $10 per hour. Other benefits as described in the Art Center
Personnel Handbook as accruing to part-time employees.
