I would recommend The Alienist and Angel of Darkness,
both by Caleb Carr. They are historical fiction set
in NYC in 1898 and 1899, when forensic science was
brand new and people thought they were all crazy. As
I recall, they are both about serial murderers. Some
grizzly murder scenes, but nothing that kept me up at
night. I enjoyed them, and the historical detail was
quite impressive.
What about the North and South trilogy by John Jakes?
Definitely some fun reading there!
