It sounds like the roots of the shell-driveways are in the Colonial period.
Although there is no evidence to suggest that they were in use at Mount Vernon,
they currently use them (so it seems) for the purpose you listed below. It
sounds like our Director is going to go ahead with the project, as it will ease
many of our visitors in accessing the museum with wheelchairs, strollers, and
so forth. Currently, we have an incredibly dense drive made of small stones
that get tracked throughout the house and, with the construction, much of it
has turned to mud-filled potholes.
