Luck in attracting resources for volunteers, money, space? What was the
public reaction, if any?
We were fairly fortunate- we didn't really come into existence until the
late 1960s and didn't open our doors until 1975- being fairly young in the
scheme of things we were never in a position to acquire a large collection
of newsprint- We have the main paper for the town going back to the first
volume in September of 1884 on microfilm- we also have all microfilmed
copies of other local papers- we do have some "real" papers- these are a few
special anniversary issues and a few special headlines- We also have a few
morgue books of a local paper that was never microfilmed- It has never been
an issue with the public, probably because the local paper is available in
an accessible format- also, my researchers are either used to the microfilm,
or are easily educated as to why we do it this way-
We have one older microfilm reader and one older reader/printer (read
neither is no longer produced)- both were purchased with a grant as was the
initial microfilm order- we are in the process of grant writing to update
our reader/printer
Personally, I prefer the microfilm to the paper copies for almost
everything- they're cleaner, more abuse resistant, and take up less space
