The Drawing Center’s
Internship Program
Fall Session
Institution
The Drawing Center is the only not-for-profit institution in the country to focus on the exhibition of drawings, both contemporary and historical. It was established in 1977 to provide opportunities for emerging and under-recognized artists; to demonstrate the significance and diversity of drawings throughout history; and to stimulate public dialogue on issues of art and culture. The Drawing Center is located in the historic SoHo district of New York City, known for its large number of art galleries, museums, and artists’ studios.
Rotational Internships
Rotational Internships provide opportunities to acquire practical experience in the departments, daily functions, and institutional structure of a small art museum and exhibition space. Interns learn the responsibilities of several departments by rotating through one of two groupings of several departments, encompassing either the departments of contemporary curation, the Viewing Program for emerging artists, and operations or the departments of historical curation, registration, publications, and development and by working closely with staff members on projects that vary according to the special and ongoing needs of the departments. Interns also assist in exhibition installations and de-installations and gain a broader sense of the holistic and integrated structure of the institution as well as acquire an understanding of the day-to-day functions of the institution by handling daily operating tasks.
To complement these practical experiences, interns work on reflective exercises that deepen their thinking and develop larger questions about what they are learning and figuring out as well as participate in professional development activities that provide assistance and resources for the possibility of future employment and professional status in the visual arts.
Eligibility
Interns should be undergraduates, graduate students, or recently graduated students and should have completed at least one year of college.
Time Commitment
Interns must commit to work a minimum of fifteen hours each week, attend opening receptions for all exhibitions, and assist with at least one special event each month during the duration of the internship. Internships run for approximately three months; the summer session runs from May to July, the fall session runs from September to December, and the winter/spring session runs from January to April. In some circumstances, interns may be able to continue for subsequent sessions.
Compensation
Interns may receive academic credit or they may volunteer their time. A small stipend may be available for the summer session.
