ICTOP ANNUAL CONFERENCE LISBON 2008
NEW APPROACHES TO MUSEUM STUDIES AND TRAINING.
A CRITICAL REVIEW
Call for Papers
ICOP is pleased to announce that the 2008 annual conference will take place
October 9 to 11 on the theme of “New approaches to museum studies and
training. A critical review”. Proposals for conference papers (maximum 20
pages) should be submitted for approval by June 30, 2008, to be reviewed by
the ICTOP Organizing Committee. If selected, you will be asked to submit
your draft by September 9, so that participants may be able to discuss the
issues at the conference within panels.
Here is a variety of objectives and themes to stimulate your thoughts:
• Quality management through training
• Continuous training as mission statement for museums
• What is new in the “inclusive museum”?
• Training in small museum and heritage sites (finance, organisation)
• Curriculum Guidelines in discussion (working group Ana Labrador)
• New approaches to training for the intangible heritage
• Training in Portuguese speaking countries
• Museology/documentation/conservation/training: a model for a study
synthesis
• SSME: Services/Science/Management/Engineering – its meaning for museums
and heritage
Papers should discuss critical issues of professional development and
training, especially those relating to continuing professional education and
also to the problems of professionalization within the museum and heritage
field.
Papers must be in manuscript format in a Word compatible document.
PowerPoint presentations will not be accepted as papers but may be used for
the short presentation summaries of your paper in the panel session.
For 2008 ICTOP is planning a wider use of a ‘panel’ method of conference
organization whereby panelists will present a summary of their papers
(maximum 10 minutes) within panels, organized according to the themes of the
conference with the aim of helping participants, through their shared
reflection, to develop more effectively their individual and/or
collaborative research and an ICTOP membership sense of critical discussion,
joint purpose and future actions.
Poster Session
A specific time and location will be allocated for poster presentations to
allow for participant interaction with poster presenters. Presenters are
asked to submit a short proposal of their presentation topic to the
conference organizers through Professor Teather. The poster session would be
a suitable time to present information about specific programs and/or
research projects, where you will be encouraged to use handouts or
PowerPoint. Here members will be able to highlight work at their
institution/organization, research, or other matters related to the topic of
the conference. These materials can also be submitted as a paper either for
the online papers or for a separate poster session portion of the online
publication, as deemed suitable by the organizers.
Proposals (papers and poster sessions) and deadline
Email proposals of 150-200 words; brief CV (must include title,
institutional affiliation and address) by June 30, 2008. Indicate whether
this is a proposal for a paper or a poster session.
Please send enquiries and proposals to:

Secretary, ICTOP,

Submissions will be acknowledged by email.
Refereeing Process
Each abstract will be peer-reviewed by the organizing committee for
acceptance at the conference against the following criteria:
• Relevance to the conference theme and sub-themes
• Clarity and coherence
• Reflection and critical assessment of conference topics and sub-themes
• Contribution to scholarship and evaluation of museum professional
development
While authors can propose a preferred presentation format (paper
presentation, panel or poster), the program committee reserves the right to
(re-)assign submissions to either paper or poster presentation track, in the
light of overall constraints on the program schedule.
Publication of Proceedings (Online)
Authors of all accepted paper proposals and of poster presentations will be
invited to prepare a full paper for inclusion in the (online) conference
proceedings, and will be edited to insure quality and consistency. The
papers should not be longer than 2000 to 3000 words. Note that at least one
of the authors must register for full conference attendance in order for the
paper to be included in the conference program and proceedings.
