In my experience there are various forms of internships. Usually an
internship implies some sort of educational component that is also combined with
hands-on work experience. In the past I have had interns who were volunteers and
others who were also paid, pre-graduate program and postgraduate, and also
interns that were in graduate schools but who were employed for some weeks during a
summer. While internships are often done for credit many are not and those
done outside of the academic aegis are done for the benefit of gaining experience
and some of the skills necessary for the profession.
Internships also benefit the manager and the institution in many ways. I have
found the experience of working with interns wonderful - and have kept
contact with many of the interns that I mentored over the years.
Cheers!
