Rebecca--you might also try the webzine Ijele and the hard copy journal
Kurio Africana. I've been looking through my files and the only exhibition
major exhibition that I've seen for that included textiles from Mali was
"Bogolan et arts graphiques du Mali" . It is cited in the Modern African
Art bibliography from the Smithsonian. The annotation is:
"The Groupe Bogolan based in Bamako have adpated Malian mud cloth
(bogolanfini) to explore a modern artistic expression. Faithfully utilizing
the tradiitonal techniques and materials that village women have developed
for dyeing mud cloth, these academically trained artists are evolving their
own mud cloth idiom. Whereas the women's cloth is patterned iwith overall
geometric designs, the urban artists paint figurative cloths, though they
often retain the geometric borders that distinguish traditional bogolanfini.
The six artists of the Groupe Bogolan featured in this 1990 exhibition in
Paris were Kandioura Coulibaly, Fallo Baba Keita, Boubacar Doumbia,
Souleymane Gora, Nene Thiam and Keletigui Dembele. Other Malian gaphic
artists featured were Salah Hidayat Diallo, Mamdou Habib Ballo, Ismael
Diabate, Nafogo Coulibaly, and Abdoulaye Konate.
Exhibition reviewed by Marie-Helene de Toffol, "Arts africains
contemporains" Afrique contemporain (Paris) no. 157-63,69 1er trimestre
1991."
They did publish a catalog.
Other avenues you may pursue would be to contact the Washington embassy for
Mali. They should be pretty helpful. Two people who are very knowledgeable
that you might speak to are: Rebecca Nagy, director of the Samuel P. Harn
Museum at U of Fla., and Mary Jo Arnoldi at the National Museum of Natural
History at the Smithsonian.
Rebecca just took the Harn position and left her job as Curator of African
Art at the North Carolina Museum of Art. Exploris (where I am) and the NCMA
are both in Raleigh and we worked together on several occasions. Rebecca is
extremely knowledgeable in African art and has traveled widely there. I
know she's been to Bamako several times, so she may know of Malian artists
here in the US. She's a lovely individual and would probably be happy to
share any information. When she left here in July, she was planning to be
in Ethiopia in November, but you could call the Harn in early December to
see if she's back. I haven't spoken with her since she left, but the
general number for the Harn is (352)392-9826.
Mary Jo is the curator who headed the re-installation of the African gallery
at the NMNH. She was very helpful to me when I was researching the Nigerian
potter Ladi Kwali. She might also have contact information for the American
Folklife festival held on the mall every summer and know if they have
featured Mali. She is also often traveling and hard to reach, but her voice
mail is (202)357-1396.
Hope this helps. Keep me updated on your progress. We're always happy to
see someone else dealing with contemporary Africa in the neighborhood.
Kind regards,
Lynn Norris

Rebecca--have you contacted the Smithsonian--Sackler Gallery? They have a
good online bibliography. Also the current art journals NKA and Glendora
might be helpful.

I am going to try this again with a subject in the subject heading. Can
anyone give me names of artists from Mali who now live and work in the
United States? I am particularly interested in textile artists, but leads
need not be confined to textile media. Thanks so much for any information
you can provide.
Sincerely,
Rebecca E. Jones
