As far as I know, that's perfectly acceptable, even preferable to a number of
other options. And don't worry about the recent crop of ignoramuses
(ignorami? ignorama?) I've been reading about who construe "madam" as an
insult.
A gender-neutral alternative for certain professional situations is "Dear
Colleague", although that might be presumptuous when applying for a job.
