Congratulations on your upcoming trip! I used to live near New Orleans, andspent many happy weekends in that lovely city's museums. There are many, many museums in the city, but I included some of my personaly favorites here. If you are interested in children's museums, African American history museums, and military history, the city offers all of these.
I highly recommend the following museums in New Orleans:
For fine arts: the New Orleans Museum of Art
For general history and architecture: The Louisiana State Museum (including the Cabildo, Presbytere, Old Mint); Hermann-Grima/Gallier Historic Houses; the Historic New Orleans Collection; the Ursuline Convent (the Sisters offer tours).
Other great places: Try walking along Royal Street with its many antique shops and galleries (esp. A Gallery for Fine Photography). Also, try driving along St. Charles to look at the wonderul houses along the avenue. The cemeteries are also fascinating, but BE CAREFUL while visiting them. I recommend going with a group since crime is unfortunately a BIG problem in these cemeteries.
All of these museums are in the main section of New Orleans. If you venture outside of the main downtown, visit Longue Vue House.
Have a wonderful time!
