Learning Experience Design will offers two professional development workshops
that are focused on enhancing visitor experiences in exhibit environments.

Designing Experience-Based Exhibits
The first workshop, Designing Experience-Based Exhibits, will combine a
practical introduction to learning theory with hands-on exercises and small
group exhibit critiques in exhibit galleries. The workshop includes an
overview of experience-based learning theories (Dewey, Piaget, Gardner,
etc.), what this approach means for designing exhibit goals and outcomes,
practical guidelines for designing exhibits that engage visitors in
meaningful interaction, and a framework for evaluating visitors' experiences
and relating this to outcomes. Each participant receives a manual containing
the workshop content, a glossary, bibliographies and other resources, and
additional readings. The workshop is conducted by Bob Russell (PhD,
Developmental Psychology) of Learning Experience Design. Russell has taught
developmental psychology at Georgetown University, directed two interactive
museums, and consults on a broad range of informal learning projects.
Using Technology to Enhance Museum Experiences
This workshop is intended to give participants a framework to understand and
evaluate the variety of technological applications available to museums
today. The workshop will provide an overview of the terms, techniques,
costs, and applications of technologies currently in use in various museum
settings and learn about new technologies that are on the horizon.
Participants will work in large and small groups to: Create a framework to
discuss technologies and their museum applications; Explore types of
technologies including audio, video, web-based technologies; Discuss design
issues that may affect the success of the technology in an exhibit setting;
Study visitor interface issues; and Discuss case studies of several museums
that are renovating existing space or building new space to accommodate new
technologies as exhibit enhancements and exhibits themselves. Participants
will receive a workshop manual that will include an overview of key concepts,
bibliography, resource list, and additional readings. The workshop will be
conducted by Carol Bossert, Ph.D. (biotechnology) of CB Services. Bossert
has held senior management positions in science centers and museums and
currently consults on exhibit and program development. She has over fifteen
years of experience in developing informal learning environments, exhibits,
public programs, theater performances, hands-on activities, and interactive
multimedia.
