Phil,
It seems to me, someone owns the copyright to the images/slides. And not
necessarily the owner of the slides, unless he took them in the first
place.
Slides and reproductions should be treated like any other image in your
collection, irrespective of the media. Digital reproductions or scans are
treated as any other photographic reproduction you might produce from an
original. I doubt you would knowingly accession a reproduction or reproduce
images without copyright approval. This seems to be substantially the same.
We are hoping to put together a session on this exact topic(digital items
as artifacts) at the upcoming 2004 MPMA conference in Casper, WY. Thoughts,
suggestions, and participation is welcome.

Someone recently loaned our institution a set of negatives containing "Nose
Art" images which we scanned. The collections committee is now trying to
decide the proper method for handling these kinds of items, as we will
surely be getting more and more of this. Do we accession the images?
Placing them on a CD with the other photographs. Additionally, Can we
accession these, since we were not given the negatives, and only the images
are our property? The owner can make as many images as he chooses, and we
can say nothing about it. If anyone has any thoughts on this quandary as
well as handling digital items as artifacts, I would sincerely appreciate
hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Phil Barnes
