I have seen one approach in, of all places, a children's arcade that
wouldn't be too difficult to implement in a museum setting. The building has
one entry/exit door accessible to visitors (there are other, alarmed,
emergency exit doors). Everyone entering or leaving the site must pass
through this gated area. Each adult and child/ren unit/group that enters
gets a matching number stamped on the back of the hand. Once inside the
gate, the kids can run free. Everyone who leaves the facility gets their
hands checked, and only adults whose numbers match those of the departing
children can leave with those children.
