Curatorial Intern
George Washington's Mount Vernon
Mount Vernon, VA
Mount Vernon seeks a Curatorial Intern to assist with documenting the
household and
personal possessions of George and Martha Washington. Since the Washingtons
had no direct heirs, their belongings were disbursed at their deaths through
the terms of their respective wills and by sales held at Mount Vernon. Many
of the items stayed in family hands. By the time the Mount Vernon Ladies'
Association purchased Mount Vernon in 1858, however, very few original
objects remained in the house. Since 1858, therefore, Mount Vernon has
attempted to identify and return to the site those items owned and used by
the Washingtons. The board and curatorial staff have kept files of
potential original objects for nearly a century. These files, called
Washingtoniana Unowned, record the fine and decorative arts as well as
personal articles brought to the attention of the Association since its
beginning. They are one of the most valuable resources at Mount Vernon for
locating original Washington objects in both public and private hands. The
Curatorial Intern will review the contents of Washingtoniana Unowned to
identify prime candidates for further research as well as create an
organizational structure for the files and a finding aid for their contents.
The internship requires 300 hours of either full or part-time work, and
carries with it a modest stipend. The successful candidate should possess a
background or interest in museum collections, material culture studies, or
the decorative arts.
