Well, it all depends, but one of the things I recall learning that is
most important is to have an accurate idea of what you have in your
collections. If you didn't, you wouldn't have any way of making sure you
were fulfilling your collections policy. Seems to me it ought to be #1
priority.
I'll bet they could even free up a lot of space and money used in
housing artifacts and things that they don't need.
Another issue that just came to mind is that if they receive any kind of
federal/state money they might be bound by law to perform an inventory
every few years. I know the museum I did my internship at had a state
mandate to have a collection wide inventory every decade.
