Among the many things you will want to factor into
your policy is where it stands relational to your
institution and your state. You may want to take a
look at the Family Medical Leave Act, and I believe
you can find a link for same on the Topics section of
my employment web site (see my signature file below,
and look in the section where employment law is
included).

If you are in California, a new law has been passed
with respect to payment during medical leave, but I
believe it doesn't take effect until something like
2003. However, you may wish to research the law
nonetheless to incorporate it into your policy (since
policies often become concrete and inflexible once put
into place).

If you were a state institution, and have concerns
about whether or not your institution falls within the
guidelines of the FMLA, you may wish to keep your eye
out for a case being heard by the US Supreme Court
this term brought by the State of Nevada indicating
that it's state-based institutions (not private but
actually paid for and run by the state) are exempt
from this law. NV contends that Congress overstepped
its authority with respect to State's rights when it
formulated the law. Given the way the Rehnquist Court
has been ruling of late, I'm inclined to believe that
NV will prevail, but we'll see.

If you wish to exchange documents, you are encouraged
to do so on http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MuseDocs .

Good luck to you!
