Hello,
I'm a staff member in the education department of a large natural history
museum on the West coast. We are currently re-formulating our school visits
and docent programs. Our goal is to move away from traditional lecture-based
guided tours and move to a more flexible, student-centered and broader
experience for school groups. Some of the things we've experimented with
this past year include short drop-in presentations, stationary docents with
carts full of touchable specimens and artifacts, role-playing, and other
short, optional experiences for teacher-led visits. Groups can visit as much
or as little of the museum as they wish and the time they spend with each
docent, presentation, activity, or cart is up to them.

Do you have a similar program in place at your institution (art museum,
nature center, natural history museum, etc.) or do you know of an
institution that does? We're planning to visit several areas of the country
to get ideas about how other institutions have or will implement such a
program. Any information you could provide would be very helpful.

Thanks,
Ed
