A slightly different system is used at the Children's Museum of Minnesota.
There, every visitor is given a button or tag with the color of the day, to
indicate they have paid.  An adult arriving alone is given a different
color.  The guards at the door watch, and if an adult who arrived alone
tries to leave with a child, they are stopped and questioned.
