If it is a simple Zippo type that uses liquid lighter fluid, pull
the lighter out of the case and remove the cotton packing. After
the fluid evaporates, the cotton can be replaced with no harm to
the lighter. Butane fueled lighters (pressurized gas)should not be
a problem. There is usually a valve or screw on the lighter case
bottom that enables one to vent the gas. If a valve cannot be
found, the screw on the bottom of better quality lighters should
allow you to seperate the lighter and its case. A valve is
normally found there attached to the fluid receptacle. This can
usually be manipulated. There is such a small amount of gas that
it should only take a secord or two. I can't imagine how any
damage could be done to a lighter in either category while
removing fluid. Good Luck, Mark Steed
