I have used ebay for over a year to add things to our
collection. We don't have a specific budget line for
acquisitions, so I don't get to buy any of the big
ticket items that I see. I have primarily used it to
purchase advertisements that will add to my exhibits
-- when I did a chocolate exhibit, I bought several
ads from the 1950s showing how chocolate was linked to
romance. For an exhibit on toys and gender, I got
LOTS of fabulous ads showing how advertising is
slanted on a gender bias. Right now I am looking for
vintage automobile ads for an upcoming exhibit. We
have bought a few smaller items manufactured by local
companies, and some McKinley memorabilia. Of course,
we would not buy something a seller claimed belonged
to the President -- only obvious McKinley items like
souvenirs, campaign buttons, commemorative pieces,
etc.
I have two PayPal accounts -- one for me and one for
the Museum. I have never had any problems whatsoever.
It is far more convenient than sending a check or
getting a money order.
