I've been flown to two interviews paid for by the place I was interviewing at.
(And neither one bothered to get back to me on whether or not I was hired!!!)
It's been my experience that a place not in your immediate locale will first do
an initial phone interview. If they are still interested, then you can work out
how to break down expenses. If you do have to pay out of pocket, at least the
expenses are tax deductable. Even if you are offered a job from a phone
interview, ALWAYS go out to the site in person and check it out. Something
could sound great from talking to people and be completely different when you
get there.
I will say to museums out there, I've driven 3 hours to an interview in another
state only to find out that it was more of a pre-lim interview. This REALLY
irked me as it could have been done over the phone and saved us both time and
effort.
Do be prepared to pay moving expenses, which can also be tax deductable but
don't be afraid to ask the museum to contribute some to moving. They can at
least pony up a few hundred of dollars for a U-Hall. If they can't, then I'd be
really wary of their financial situation and continued existance.
Good luck!!
Deb
