Director, University of Delaware Museum

The university seeks an energetic and experienced individual with proven
leadership abilities to build a shared vision and provide strategic and
administrative direction for the University of Delaware Museum. This
search is occasioned in part by the gift to the University of the Paul
R. Jones Collection, a major collection of African American art. The
Jones Collection will be showcased in Mechanical Hall, a newly renovated
historic building on campus, set to open in late 2003; additional new
gallery space is anticipated in a planned Center for the Arts. The
University Gallery has also recently acquired the Frederick and Lucy S.
Herman collection of Native American art, and boasts the largest
collegiate collections in the United States of the works of pioneering
photographer Gertrude Käsebier (1852-1934 ) and modernist painter,
Abraham Walkowitz ( 1880-1965), significant holdings of Works Progress
Administration graphics, pre-Columbian ceramics, Russian icons, and rare
works of art by Aristide Maillol, Auguste Rodin, Mary Cassatt, and
László Moholy-Nagy, among others. In addition, the Irenee DuPont Mineral
Museum displays approximately 750 mineral specimens and houses a
collection of over 6000 minerals and geologic objects.

Masters degree required (Ph.D. or other terminal degree preferred) in a
job-related content area (art, art history, art conservation), with
strong qualifications for a secondary faculty appointment in an
appropriate academic department; certification and/or coursework in
museum studies and at least ten years of progressively responsible
professional experience in museum management and administration
preferred. Demonstrated expertise in successful grant-writing and
fundraising, exhibition design, special events, collections management
practices, public relations, interpretative programming, and facilities
planning necessary. Requires skill in budget preparation and fiscal
management. Effective interpersonal and communication skills and the
ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a
diverse community.

The new director will facilitate the use of the museums' collections in
educational programming for undergraduates as well as graduate students,
in faculty research, and in community outreach. He/she will also work
closely with faculty and staff in the University's many outstanding and
unique museum training and conservation programs, and affiliated
departments (e.g., the Museum Studies Program, the Winterthur Program in
Early American Culture, the Hagley Program in Industrial History,
Winterthur/University of Delaware Department of Art Conservation, Art,
Art History, the Center for American Material Culture Studies).

The director will work closely with faculty and the University Museum
staff to integrate the museum's programs and resources throughout the
intellectual life and curriculum of the University. The director will
articulate the educational mission of the museum to the campus
community, the region, and the nation. He/she will work closely with a
museum advisory group to shape the future direction of the collections,
expansion of the staff, and faculty hiring in related fields within the
College of Arts and Science.
