Summer 2003 preservation workshop schedule (Please excuse cross-posting):
*************GRANT WRITING FOR DIGITAL AND PRESERVATION PROJECTS************
Wednesday, August 6, 2003 at SOLINET, Atlanta, GA from 9am - 4pm.
This full-day workshop focuses on preparing for and writing grants for
digitization and/or preservation projects. Since most digitization and
preservation grants are refunded through the National Endowment for the
Humanities (NEH), the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), and
the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), this
session is based upon those particular granting entities' requirements.
Developing proposals for state, local and foundation funding sources will
also be addressed. The majority of the day is spent covering the elements of
a grant proposal and practicing writing those elements.
Cost is $105 SOLINET members, all membership categories, ($95 early bird,
$130 late registration); $145 Non-SOLINET members ($135 early bird, $170
late registration). Any institution within Georgia qualifies for the member
rate.
***************ATTACK OF THE GIANT MOLD SPORE*************
Friday, August 15, 2003 at Winthrop University, Rock Hill, SC from 9am -
4pm.
Mold is a constant threat to collections, particularly in climates with high
heat humidity. This full day workshop focuses on identifying mold, the types
of damage it causes to collection materials, and techniques for safe mold
removal and cleaning. Dr. Michael Trinkley, Director of the Chicora
Foundation is the instructor for this session.
Cost is $105 SOLINET Members ($95 early bird, $130 late registration), and
$145 Non-SOLINET, ($135 early bird, $170 late registration). Any
institution within South Carolina qualifies for the member rate.
*****************Commercial Library Binding**************************
Thursday, August 21, 2003, at the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL
from 9am - 4 pm.
This workshop provides the tools needed to make appropriate binding
decisions that balance preservation goals and financial realities. Modules
include: book structure and modern book manufacturing methods, an overview
of bindery operations, discussion on contracts and vendor relations, and
decision making. Included is a showing of Library Binding: A Shared
Responsibility, A Collaborative Effort (a 1989 video developed by a team of
librarians and binders), an exhibit of binding materials and methods, and a
hands-on decision-making exercise.
This workshop is designed for heads of technical services, serials, and/or
binding departments, and bindery clerks in the bindery prep unit.
Cost is $105 SOLINET members ($95 early bird, $130 late registration); $145
Non-SOLINET members ($135 early bird, $165 late registration). Any
institution within Florida qualifies for the member rate.
**************FUNDAMENTALS OF BOOK REPAIR***************
Wednesday-Thursday, September 11-12, 2003 at Western Kentucky University,
Bowling Green, KY from 8:30 am - 5 pm.
This two-day workshop is designed for staff members who perform book repair
in libraries and those who supervise repair units. The workshop teaches
simple, economical, and preservation quality repairs for materials in
general, circulating, and reference collections. The procedures covered are
tightening hinges, endsheet replacement, spine replacement, paper mending,
tip-ins, and hinge-ins.
The workshop will NOT cover techniques for the repair of materials that are
special, rare, or archival.
Cost is $175 SOLINET members, all membership categories, ($165 early bird,
$200 late registration); $215 Non-SOLINET members ($205 early bird, $240
late registration). Any institution within Kentucky qualifies for the member
rate.
*************EL CUIDADO DE SUS COLECCIONES****************
Jueves 18 de Septiembre de 2003, Universidad de Puerto Rico, Facultad de
Ciencias y Tecnicas de la Informacion, de las 9:00 a las 16:00 horas
Una introducci¢n a temas de preservacion. La preservaci¢n, como parte del
mantenimiento de las colecciones, juega un papel importante en todo tipo de
bibliotecas porque protege la inversi¢n en la coleccion, especialmente en
estos dias de escasez mayor de dinero y de mayores ecesidades. Las
expectativas de vida de las colecciones de bibliotecas pueden incrementarse
substancialmente y sin mucho costo, cuando se aplican principios de
preservacion basicos y sencillos a las actividades corrientes.
Esta sesion esquematizara los rasgos fundamentales de un programa de
bienestar, demostrando la manera como todo el personal de la biblioteca,
juega un papel importante en la preservacion de la coleccion. Pone enfasis
en medidas preventivas e incluye informacion sobre los elementos de un
programa exhaustivo de preservaci¢n, la naturaleza de los materiales de la
biblioteca, y los mecanismos de deterioro. Las presentaciones cubren el
cuidado adecuado y practicas de manejo, mantenimiento de los aranceles,
educacion de usuarios y personal, y encuadernaci¢n de materiales de la
biblioteca.
Precio: $105 Dolares para los miembros de SOLINET ($95 inscripcion temprana,
