This 10-session course introduces participants to the principles and
practices of managing museums in the 21st century. Sessions include an
overview of the various types of museums; mission, governance and ethics;
planning and educational programming; fiscal management; exhibition
development and collections management; fundraising and marketing
strategies; and the realities of the museum workplace environment.
Emphasis will be placed on the relationship of museums to their communities
and audiences; the professional context of museum work; and emerging
developments in leadership and management theory that can help organizations
and staff reach their fullest potential. At the conclusion of the course,
participants will have a better understanding of museum operations and the
challenges and opportunities that exist within the industry.
