Tarn,

On our board of trustees, the Secretary is one of the Executive Officers
of the board. I would not attach any stigma to being the secretary of
the board.

Subject: Board memberships

We've had some interesting comments on how volunteering is perceived by
potential employers. I'm curious how potential employers view board
memberships on a resume. I'm currently serving as a secretary and
trustee on the board of a small local museum. Is this considered
favorable experience toward a museum job?

Also, I've noticed some interesting reactions when I've told people
about my position. When I say I'm a trustee, I see some raised eyebrows
and hear "wow, good for you." Then I mention that I'm also the
secretary, and the eyebrows go down, and people no longer seem
impressed. I hate the "just a secretary" stigma, but is it better to
leave it off a resume and just say that I'm a trustee?

Sincerely,

         Tarn Cheon
