our Fall 2002 Preservation Workshops (Please excuse cross-posting):
*************DIGITAL IMAGING OF LIBRARY MATERIALS*****************
Friday-Saturday, October 25-26, 2002, University of Florida, Gainesville,
FL from 9am-4pm.
This two-day hands-on workshop is designed for individuals with little to
no experience with digitization. Participants will gain practical
experience scanning and editing image files, and will receive an
introduction to the issues surrounding small to mid-sized library imaging
projects.
Topics covered include: equipment requirements for library digitization
projects, equipment calibration, the difference between digital imaging
and optical character recognition, the "scan once" methodology, file types
and compression, basic scanner operation, basic image adjustment and
manipulation using Adobe Photoshop, OCR, terminology used in digitization
projects, preservation of digital masters, file naming, and storage media.
The instructor for this workshop is Jill Sexton, Digitization Projects
Librarian, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Cost is $300 SOLINET members ($295 early bird, $325 late registration),
$360 Non-members ($350 early bird, $385 late registration). Any
institution in Florida qualifies for the member rate.
*********RISK MANAGEMENT FOR LIBRARIES & CULTURAL COLLECTIONS***********

Monday, November 4, 2002, Historic New Orleans Collection, New Orleans, LA
from 9 am - 4 pm.
This full-day workshop discusses risk management techniques for libraries
and cultural collections. Through lecture, discussion, and break-out
sessions, the following topics will be highlighted: determining value of
collections, types of property insurance coverage, insuring specific
materials, choosing an insurance agent, and getting an appraisal.
The instructor for this workshop is Jeanne Drewes, Assistant Director for
Access and Preservation, Michigan State University Libraries.
Cost is $105 SOLINET members ($95 early bird, $125 late registration),
$145 Non-members ($135 early bird, $165 late registration). Any
institution in Louisiana qualifies for the member rate.

Tuesday, November 5, 2002, University of Central Florida, Orlando, FL from
9:00 am - 4:00 pm.
The workshop will outline the manager's role in organizing and planning
preservation activities in a library or archives. It includes lecture and
discussions covering the following topics: the nature of library
materials, elements of a preservation program, effects of storage
conditions, organization and planning, selection, and strategies for
integrating preservation into library operations.
The instructor is Julie Arnott, Preservation Manager, SOLINET.
Cost is $105 SOLINET members, ($95 early bird, $125 late registration),
$145 Non-members ($135 early bird, $165 late registration). Any

*****************CARE OF PHOTOGRAPHIC MATERIALS*********************
Friday, November 15, 2002, South Carolina State Library, Columbia, SC from
9:00 am - 4:00 pm.
This full-day introductory workshop is designed to aid cultural
institutions in developing preservation strategies based on real-world
issues; for example storage conditions and handling guidelines for
photographic collections that provide protection and access.
Among the topics covered: photographic materials and processes; issues
with prints, color, film, glass, albums, etc.; environment and storage
specifications; handling and housing guidelines; exhibition issues;
duplication and reformatting; new technologies; collection maintenance;
and preservation planning.
Instructor: Andrew Robb is a photograph conservator whose clients have
included the National Gallery of Art, the Library of Congress, The
National Museum of American Art, and the National Museum of American
History.
The workshop is designed for those who have photograph collections and
will be particularly significant for those who are responsible for the
care or use of these materials.
Cost is $105 SOLINET members ($95 early bird, $125 late registration),
$145 Non-members ($135 early bird, $165 late registration). Any
institution in South Carolina qualifies for the member rate.
*************MANAGING AND PRESERVING DIGITAL MATERIALS*****************
Friday, November 22 2002, SOLINET, Atlanta, GA from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.
This basic workshop is designed to introduce participants to the
principles of preserving and providing access to materials in digital
formats. The workshop focuses on methods and issues in selecting,
accessioning, providing reference for, and preserving materials in
electronic form. The workshop is intended for archivists and those who
have a good understanding of archival principles and techniques, but need
basic training in how to apply the principles to records in electronic
form.
Instructor is Thomas J. Ruller, Supervisor of Data Processing, New York
State Education Department.
Cost is $155 governing members any category, ($145 early bird, $180 late
registration), $165 governing members any category, ($155 early bird, $190
late
registration) $225 non-members, ($215 early bird, $250 late
registration). Any institution within Georgia qualifies for the governing
member
rate.
