Request for Qualifications
The Civil War History Consortium, Inc. is a new organization dedicated to
bringing Philadelphia's Civil War heritage and legacy to light - and to life.
The Consortium is comprised of approximately 17 Philadelphia area collecting
institutions with substantial Civil War holdings.
Over the last 18 months, the Civil War History Consortium has begun planning
a series of public activities that will extend over the next 14 years,
culminating in the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War, 2011 - 2015. These will
include exhibits, publications, tours, media productions, and educational
programs for area residents and tourists of all ages. Now, with funding
provided by the William Penn Foundation and the Haas Family Trust, the
Consortium is seeking a Public History Consultant to move the effort forward.
Scope of Services
· Preliminary research and feasibility planning for a major exhibition on
Philadelphia's role in the Civil War featuring materials from a range of
institutional and private holdings.
· Overseeing collection of information on Civil War holdings of Consortium
members.
· Managing the production and promotion of a region-wide event during 2003
that showcases the Civil War holdings of area collecting institutions.
· Scheduling and attending meetings with prospective funders and Consortium
members.
· Feasibility research for up to three other long-term public program
possibilities that might include tours, events, media productions, and
publications.
· Planning and preparation of up to five grant proposals to secure funds
to support the Consortium and its activities.
· Preparation of financial and narrative reports for funders and Civil War
History Consortium.
· Coordination and attending Consortium's board and subcommittee meetings;
preparing meeting minutes.
Qualifications:
Graduate degree in American history, preferably in the Civil War era.
Experience in historical exhibition planning, public history programming;
grant-writing. project management and board management.
Fee in the range of $18,000 - $20,000
