DIRECTOR OF MUSEUMS
The Ohio Historical Society seeks an educator/leader to serve as the
Director of Museums overseeing the state museum in Columbus and 61 historic
sites statewide. Reporting to the Deputy Executive Director/Chief Operating
Officer and based in Columbus, Ohio, the position is responsible for all
aspects of the Society's exhibitions and educational/interpretive
programming both offered directly on-site and via the web and other
multi-media venues. The ideal candidate is creative, yet practical, with
excellent communication skills and the ability to provide financial
oversight. The incumbent will promote the Society's sites/museums within
local communities as well as nurture and cultivate a statewide presence.
The position fosters fund raising, participates with boards, legislators,
and support groups, and supervises complex facilities. The successful
candidate will be a dynamic individual with a passion for American history,
a compelling vision for creating engaging and attractive museum experiences,
a thorough understanding of methods for developing exceptional educational
programs for all ages and audiences, and the ability to build on the
institution's successful public/private partnership with the state of Ohio.
Preferred qualifications include PhD in history or related field or
equivalent experience; knowledge of American history, especially in the
mid-west; minimum of 8 years of progressively responsible administration;
highly experienced senior manager with demonstrated relevant experience in
all or many of the areas of responsibility; an informed understanding of the
mission/vision of a public history organization and the applicability of
various interpretive delivery systems to attract and serve a diverse
audience.
