Lynne, I think that's really being too overprotective on the teacher's part.
Fifth grade? My boy's in 5th grade and we have had very frank conversations
about 9/11. Most 5th graders these days are pretty sophisticated. We are in
PA not far from NYC, so it's probably a bit different than having daily
commuters, but I would hope that by now there could be some sort of dialogue
with these children.
I would think that talking about death 200 years ago is quite different than
discussing terrorism today. And I think the teacher did not give her
students enough credit that they could understand the difference.
