What I did once for an exhibit at the Peterborough Centennial Museum and
Archives was burn the tracks repeatedly onto CD (one for each sound you
need) and buy a few cheap players. I made a box around each player out of
wood and left the play button exposed. The public could press the button
and listen to the track and the track would stop when the sound blip was
over. This was the most econimical means by which we could accomplish this
and all in all, each sound station cost about $100.00. This would reduce
the cost to $2000 instead of $20,000.

Subject: Sound for exhibits
Greetings, museum folks:
We are planning 20 brief recordings for various exhibits in our museum.
The plan includes a digital recorder, speaker, and push-button to
activate the sound for each display. The quote that we have is about
$1,000 per systen -- $20,000 total. Seems too much to me. Any other
suggestions? What is working in your museum and at what cost?
