Depending on what kind (and quality) of images you need, you might find the
Library of Congress offers some suitable material. - Scads of images (and
multimedia) .. http://lcweb.loc.gov/
You can search by topic, and download in various file formats (including
jpeg and tiff) .. An incredible resource. As an aside, you'll likely need
robust bandwidth to fully enjoy the larger files offered by the "people's
library".
