Just to add to the confusion I did my Senior thesis on "As simple as Black and White-The Landless Whites and Free Blacks of the Antebellum South" Landless whites were often considered lower even then the slaves (take a look at Fredrick Douglas's portrayal of them for example) and not all slave owners were white. One African-American gentleman in particular owned over 300 slaves making him in the top 3% of the Carolina slave holders. Just thought I'd stir the pot a little:) Annmarie
