There is a formula for a good home-made newspaper preservative, involving soaking
the papers in a solution of (no joke!) club soda and milk of magnesia! I did it to the
sports section in April, 1974, the day after Hank Aaron hit his 715th homer, and the
paper hasn't yellowed a bit.
Now, this process leaves the paper lumpy and waterloged, so I would NEVER
recommend it for museum purposes. But for the average Joe who wants a souvenir
and doesn't want to pay for professional paper preservation (PPP), it works just
fine.
I'll see if I can dig it up this weekend. (I clipped the formula out of the newspaper
and -- yes -- preserved it.)
